What was still part of Japanese youth culture a few decades ago has established itself in the West as well: Cosplay

The origins of Cosplay lie in Japan. Young people made their own elaborate costumes to dress up as their favorite characters from manga books and anime films. Under the suspicious eyes – how could it be otherwise – of their parents, they then met to simply hang together. Over the time, however, cosplay became more and more professional, and an entire industry developed around it.

The trend spread to Europe and the USA at some point. There it quickly became an integral part of the program, especially on the comiccons, where fans of the western version of the comic meet. Cosplayers from near and far compete with their costumes since then.
